A tooth extraction is the removal of a tooth from its socket in the bone.
Why is a tooth extraction needed?
If a tooth has been broken or damaged by decay, we can restore with a filling or ceramic crown. However, if the damage is too great for the tooth to be repaired, then extraction may be necessary.
There are two types of extractions:
- A simple extraction – The dentist loosens the tooth with an instrument and removes it.
- A surgical extraction – This is a more complex procedure and may require referral to an oral surgeon.
